Just for Today – Do your work honestly

At the very heart of the Reiki system of healing there are five guiding principles that you can introduce into your daily life. Mikao Usui, Reiki Founder, taught that when you make the decision to practise Reiki and to live by these principles, you are better able to live in balance, find alignment and happiness.

The principles are:

Just for today…

I will not worry

I will not anger

I will be grateful

I will do my work honestly

I will be kind to every living thing

Just for Today – Do your work honestly

This principle reminds us to work from a place of honesty and integrity towards others as well as ourselves.  It is also a reminder for you to reflect upon your values and whether they serve your highest good as well as the highest good of others. We often inherit our parent’s values, but as we go through life, those values may change to reflect what is most important to us and how we would like to live our life.

It has been my experience that when you live by your personal values and this Reiki principle, life seems to unfold seamlessly for the good of all concerned.

A few years ago I had a client who had just been told her young son had a brain tumour.  She asked me if Reiki could heal her son and reduce his tumour. I believe in the human body’s ability to heal itself and for Reiki to assist in that healing.

Although I’ve been always open to the healing potential that Reiki offers, I was mindful not to promise to heal or to give my client a false sense of hope, especially if it would influence her decision to seek further medical treatment for her son.

After the session, I had a sense that my client was disappointed because I didn’t tell her what I suspect she desperately wanted to hear – that Reiki could heal her son. However, in my heart, I knew I did the right thing by her as well as myself. I acted in alignment with what I felt was the best I could do, at that time. I could have appeased her by telling her what I suspected she wanted to hear, but I would have been acting out of integrity, which would not have served her highest good in the long run.

More importantly, it was not my intention to place my client in a position to choose between Reiki and western medicine. It’s important to note that Reiki should always be considered as a complementary therapy and not as an alternative.

My intention is to provide my clients with a positive experience with Reiki.  However, I can’t control how others feel and or how they may interpret the messages and guidance that comes through.  I can only do my best and hope that it is enough.  When all else fails, I turn back to the simplicity of Reiki and the love that it imparts.

Finally, I recall a conversation with an oncologist who told me one of his patients, who had an aggressive form of cancer, refused chemotherapy. His patient was religious, and based on his minister’s counsel that his faith would heal him, he chose not to have chemotherapy. As a consequence, his cancer progressed. He developed painful lesions all over his body and eventually became blind. The doctor told me that his patient suffered unnecessarily and believed that chemotherapy would have given him a better chance of slowing the progress of his cancer.

While I know it’s hard to read, this story clearly demonstrates the importance of acting and living from a place of integrity, especially when practising Reiki.  Although it was not the intention of the minister to cause unnecessary suffering to this man, it begs the question of whether the minister’s advice served the man’s highest good. Did the minister consider the impact his words would have on this man’s life?

These are the types of questions we are asked to consider under the principle, “Just for today, do your work honestly.”
