How to use Reiki to help deal with anger – 5 Reiki Principles

At the very heart of the Reiki system of healing there are five guiding principles that you can introduce into your daily life. Mikao Usui, Reiki Founder, taught that when you make the decision to practise Reiki and to live by these principles, you are better able to live in balance, find alignment and happiness.

The principles are:

Just for today…

I will not worry

I will not anger

I will be grateful

I will do my work honestly

I will be kind to every living thing

Just for Today – I will not Anger

All of us experience anger from time to time. Anger is not necessarily a negative emotion. Rather, it is a sign that a person or an event has perhaps crossed a boundary. It is an emotion that is triggered by an external event or circumstance, and we often blame that particular event or circumstance for the anger.

However, according to Usui, anger is a reflection of what already exists within us and provides us with the opportunity to look beneath the anger. It provides us the opportunity to question why such an event or circumstance has triggered the anger. In doing so, we learn to come to terms with the emotion and we begin to unravel the tapestry of life events that underpin the angry emotions.

We discover what is commonly referred to as the shadow self; Aspects of ourselves that need to be accepted and healed. When we are responding from anger, we are not seeing the event or circumstance objectively for what it truly is. In addition, responding angrily to a situation often makes matters worse.

For instance, I had a client who used to get into a rage whenever her children failed to ready themselves in time for school in the mornings.

The anger was so disproportionate to the event and that triggered her anger so much so it was tinkering on what one would say was emotionally abusive to the children. After having a few Reiki sessions, my client discovered that the anger she held was actually a result of her upbringing. Her mother was often emotionally and physically abusive to her whenever she failed to behave in a manner expected by her mother.  Although she eventually blocked out those childhood memories from her conscious mind, she harboured huge resentment and anger, which she had directed toward her children. Through Reiki, she recognised, accepted and eventually released the resentment and anger.

Her perspective on the morning activities to ready her children for school changed and she was no longer triggered by what she previously viewed as chaos. Instead, she became calm and changed the morning routines that helped her children get to school on time on a regular basis.

The energy of Reiki brings insight, understanding, and most importantly, love and acceptance to our life’s most painful memories and experiences we have endured.  I have not yet met one person who hasn’t been affected by guilt, shame, anger and pain. Many hold onto these feelings and as a consequence, build emotional barriers to protect themselves – their hearts – from further pain. Although those barriers keep them safe to a degree, they also keep out the love that they are craving and deserve.

To live by the principle, do not anger, you embark on a journey of self-discovery and understanding of who you truly are.

Gratitude is the antidote to worry and anger. Quite simply, it is impossible to have emotions of anger and worry when you are in gratitude. In addition, worry and anger are believed to cause dis‘ease’ in mind, body and spirit, the constant practice of gratitude can contribute to healing such illnesses.

When you practice gratitude on a daily basis, especially when you are in states of worry and anger, and focus your mind on all the people, places and things that make your life brighter, or that bring you joy, your life starts to change for the better. You begin to vibrate at a higher frequency, which allows you to experience and exude more positivity in your life.
